Web Research Application Pain, an open statement to developers & Webstractor

Premise

People do web research.
I will copy and paste information into my documents and presentations.
The source of that information is not obvious or saved.

Workflow

A Web Research Application (hereafter abbreviated WRApp) should allow the download of webpages where content can be highlighted and commented on. Switching views from “research” to “consolidation” shows only the highlighted elements. These highlighted items can be dragged or copied and pasted into any application along with the source and a linkn back. The link back would allow the user to view the original document stored in WRApp providing full context to work even after it has gone through numerous revisions.

Resources

Multiple applications to providing link back functionality using LinkBack
Current Web Research Applications

* Googalyzer might evolve to support some needs

Automatic Bookmarking of Frequently Visited Pages

I rely on my browsers auto-compelte to make it both faster and to remind me of websites I have visited in the past and or frequently, which leads me to wonder why that information can’t be made more useful for me. I tend to bookmark items I think I will have use for later in the future while the websites I visit the most frequently do not even have a bookmark to them. This would be advantageous as I could more quickly navigate to these websites using a launcher which indexes my bookmarks, it would also prevent me from loosing valuable websites when the location items eventually clear out of history. The more frequently a website is visited the darker the background could be when the auto-complete suggestions pop down when typing in the location bar to signify their importance.

Guiding a User, Showing History

Looking to learn more about ScreenSteps, a product to create documentation from screenshots, I noticed a nice feature, while clicking through the material on their website it was easy to see which pages I had visited. This kind of functionality is built in and easily accessible with HTML but underutilized. It was clear to me which pages might contain additional juicy details to get me to use their product, and allowed me to explore features in the order that interested me. Take it for a spin on the BlueMangoLearning website.

Social Networking Finally got Useful

Mosoto has the potential to shape how we interact with the people that we know at varying levels from our close network of friends, to our network of acquaintances, and to our extended networks. You can potentially find other people engaged in your unique areas of interest or finish your homework assignment together with the other kids in your class even if you don’t know them enough to have their phone number. As a plus it ties in a neat social music service which really leverages the recommendations of your personal friends (and likely again their network) which could make product offerings like last.fm really interesting if paired with the service also through the Facebook API. Even before really delving into it the possibilities seem large.

Potentially Useful APIs (SnipShot)

It would be nice when you needed to upload an avatar that you could use something like SnipShot’s API to allow a picture to be uploaded and the proper cropping settings automatically be presented.

This is available with their API and with the callbacks it would be great to have this in Drupal.

Switching Email Providers (Google to Hotmail)

There are plugins for Mail.app and I am sure Outlook to download your hotmail locally. From there you can setup a rule to forward your hotmail to your new gmail account. Then setting up a filter in GMail can allow you to tag all email sent to the old email at which point you can inform your contacts you have changed your email address. Maybe just put it in your signature.

What happense if you do not want to be stuck to GMail or any provider for that matter, what if you want your contacts to never go through the trouble of having to relearn your email address again? You might want your own domain name, see section 2 in personal branding. Also see how to manage your email and prevent spam.

Communicating Effectively

Originating Thoughts

A recent visit to Garr Reynolds Presentation Zen Blog will remind you of how fine an art presenting is. Mark earlier today commented on body language, an element in non verbal communication.

Communicating Effectively

How do we make ourselves understood and how do we communicate with others most effectively?
I think we will succeed in getting our message across most successfully when we deteriorate what we can expect of our audience.
What happens when you try to communicate with someone:

  • who has a short attention span,
  • who doesn’t know anything about the given subject area you are talking about,
  • who decides to listen to you with their eyes closed,
  • who rudely plugs in their iPod while you are speaking,
  • who suddenly forgets how to speak the English language?

It might help to

  • start by refining your goal to a simple message,
  • provide a compelling and structured flow of information,
  • putting yourself in the shoes of your audience,
  • making use of both body language and the tones of your voice,
  • providing relevant but very simple visual cues.

Games to Play

  • Find something complex and summarize it visually into a single diagram
  • Design instructions to teach someone something without using any words
  • Paraphrase and format an email to convey the most important information with the goal of increasing the chances of getting a reply
  • Good ol Pictionary or charades
  • Hold a conversation without words but rather with a small pad of paper, the smaller the pad, the more bonus points

A Manual for Effecting Positive Change

Based on a few discussions with Allen, TJ, and myself we decided we wanted to start something with a positive impact, something where people could come together to build towards a common goal of effecting positive change. Read more.

The Neo User Experience

This article will argue that there are two main areas which need to be addressed prior to the next fundamental shift in the usability of technology, hereafter refereed to as the Neo User Experience (NUE). The first area is Consolidation, or the aggregation of relevant data into a single view. The second area is Context, or the availability of the aggregated information in relevant circumstances.

Consolidation

Introduction to Consolidation

The NUE benefits from consolidation by gathering relevant information in a single view rather than having information disperesed across different mediums or locations. RSS is a popular consolidation tool which has brought news and blog updates into a single view, but we need to go further. Wize has the concept nailed down, rating electronics based on numerous other website ratings, Google is also following this practice quite well (examples: [1] & [2].

Benefits

The benefits should be clear, instead of having to visit a number of different sources of information, rather all the relevant information can be displayed to you as 1) an average or 2) in the original sum of its parts, giving the end user both 1) a quick overview or 2) a detailed report of the findings. An average might be useful in the case of aggregating ratings such as some of the examples above, or if reading an wikipedia article to get an overview of different opinions on a matter. The original parts are critical because they provide the validity and background sources you need to make an informed decision.

Issues

There are however a number of hurdles which must be overcome

  • What sources of information do we use
  • How do we get all the data together

These issues can be discussed on the Consolidation page.

Context

Introduction to Context

The NUE benefits from context by providing the aggregated and relevant information or controls to the user when they need it most. To illustrate think of a warning message that pops up in your webmail when you’re close to filling your quota (something I hope you took care of by signing up for a gmail account), The Apple iPhone is a fantastic example of how an interface can shift based on context, showing a keyboard when text messaging, but not when viewing movies. Microsoft has even embraced this with their new toolbars in Vista and Office.

Benefits

Again the benefits are obvious, instead of having to search for relevant information or controls, they are presented to you when they are needed.

Issues

The main issue which needs to be overcome is defining under what context items appear, and how these relationships work

These issues can be discussed on the Context page.
